Google Business Profile: Free Visibility for Your Small Business
Search for a plumber, hairdresser or coffee shop near you and Google shows a map with three local businesses before any normal website results. That box is powered by Google Business Profiles — and for a small business that serves a local area, appearing there can matter more than any other form of marketing. It costs nothing.
Why it matters
- You appear in Google Maps and in the local results box when people nearby search for your service.
- Customers see your phone number, WhatsApp, opening hours and directions without even visiting your website.
- Google reviews build trust before a customer has spoken to you — and most people read them.
- It costs nothing and works around the clock, even while you are busy with clients.
Setting it up
Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account. Enter your business name exactly as you use it everywhere else, choose the most accurate category, and add your address or — if you visit customers rather than receiving them — set a service area instead. Add your phone number and your website address.
Google will ask you to verify the business, usually by phone, email, video or a postcard to your address. Verification can take a few days, but it is what makes the profile yours and prevents anyone else from claiming it.
Making the profile work hard
An empty profile does very little. Add real photographs of your work, your premises or your products — profiles with photos get noticeably more enquiries. Write a short, plain description of what you do and who you serve. Keep your opening hours accurate, especially over holidays. And answer the questions customers post; unanswered questions look like unanswered phones.
Reviews are the engine
Ask every happy customer for a review, and make it easy by sending them your direct review link. A steady flow of genuine, recent reviews is the single strongest factor in how prominently Google shows your profile. Reply to every review, including the occasional unhappy one — a calm, professional reply tells readers more about your business than the complaint does.
Your profile and your website work together
A Business Profile gets you found; your website closes the deal. When someone taps through from Google, they should land on a fast, clear site that confirms they are in the right place and makes contacting you effortless. The two reinforce each other — and the profile link, reviews and location details all strengthen how Google understands and ranks your website too.
