Business Websites
How Much Does a Website Cost in South Africa?
It is the first question almost every business asks, and the honest answer is that there is no single price. A five-page website for a local service business and an online store with hundreds of products are two completely different pieces of work, even though both are called a website.
What actually determines the price
- Size — how many pages and how much content needs to be structured and built.
- Functionality — enquiry forms are simple; bookings, payments, portals and integrations are not.
- Design — whether the site follows an existing brand or needs a visual direction created from scratch.
- Content — whether copy, images and product data already exist or need to be produced.
- Integrations — payment providers, CRMs, calendars, email tools and third-party systems all add scope.
- Ongoing care — weekly checks, updates and fresh on-site content are optional after the build.
Why cheap and expensive both exist
A very low quote usually means a generic template with your logo dropped into it. That can be fine for a placeholder, but it rarely reflects how your business actually works or supports enquiries and search visibility. At the other end, large agency pricing carries account managers, project managers and overheads that a small business often does not need.
Working directly with an independent developer sits in between: the person planning your project is the person building it, so the budget goes into the website rather than into layers of coordination.
How to budget sensibly
Start with what you need the website to do rather than how many pages you want. If the goal is enquiries, invest in structure, clarity and speed. If the goal is selling products, the catalogue and checkout experience matter most. If a manual process is eating your time, the automation is worth more than another page of copy.
A short scoping conversation is usually enough to turn a vague idea into a defined project and a realistic figure.
Plan for care after hand-over
A website can be handed over for you to manage, or supported with optional weekly care. The right care plan depends on the size of the site and covers checks, supplied updates, useful new content, basic technical SEO, security and performance.
