What Should a Small Business Website Include?

Theresa Grainger 5 min read

Most small business websites fail for the same reason: they describe the business instead of helping the customer decide. A visitor lands on the page with a specific question, and if the answer is not obvious within a few seconds they leave.

The essentials

  • A clear statement of what you do and who you do it for, above the fold.
  • Service pages or sections that explain each offering in plain language.
  • Evidence of your work — examples, photographs, projects or process detail.
  • An obvious way to make contact from every page.
  • Location and service-area information if you serve a specific region.
  • Fast, mobile-first pages, because most visitors arrive on a phone.

The things worth adding when they fit

Booking forms, quote calculators, online payments, customer portals and automated confirmation emails all remove work from your day. None of them belong on every website — they belong on the websites where the business actually does that thing manually today.

The things to skip

Long company histories, stock photography that could belong to anyone, and pages built purely to look busy. Every page should have a job.

Keep it useful after launch

Once the site is live, regular checks and small updates help it stay accurate, secure and useful. If you do not want to manage that yourself, optional weekly care can cover the practical upkeep and fresh on-site content.
